Our Philosophy: Divorce, Conflict Resolution and Custody Solutions with Dignity and Respect
The cornerstone of our philosophy is that the current system is broken. People, and may lawyers, are programmed to get in their corners and get ready to fight as dirty and nasty as possible. Who does that benefit? Parties that are already suffering from emotional stress of the situation? No! Lawyers who have to manage their own emotions in addition to those of their own parties, opposing parties and opposing counsel? No! Innocent children who are involved through no fault of their own? Absolutely, not! Unfortunately, the “Old Guard” has created a system that encourages exactly this type of hostility that not only requires great monetary resources, but it requires parties to expend great emotional resources as well. And the results are likely not to be much different had the parties agreed to resolve their issues using a process that is built on respect, transparency and collaboration! This is why Unity Law + Mediation utilizes an approach that promotes an alternative to the hostile process promoted by the “Old Guard”.
Our Approach: One Size Doesn’t Fit All!
While our core belief is that family law solutions need to be approached from less adversarial angle, one size doesn’t fit all. Each client is a person. No two people are alike. This means each person has their own unique facts, quirks, traits and circumstances that require a personalized approach. Our approach is to make sure that we can customize our approach, in line with our core philosophy, to develop a solution that works for you. Our philosophy is not shared by every other attorney, or potential client, so it is entirely possible that we are not a good fit for your desired outcome. Guess what? That is OK! Just like we grounded in our philosophy, you may have your own opinion on how you want to achieve your desired outcome. No worries. If it becomes clear after our consultation that the fit isn’t good, we will provide you with names of other attorneys in our network that may be better suited to your needs.
Our People: James E. Heiliger, Attorney/Mediator/GAL/Peacemaker
As the firm name suggests, trying to bring people together during a process that is defined by splitting them apart is my ultimate goal. Very counterintuitive, right? It’s also challenging but I believe it is well-worth the effort. Though I am an attorney by trade, I am not a confrontational person by nature. I try to see the good in everyone. I am flawed just as every other human and that is the mindset I use when approaching solutions for my clients. Through my practice as a family law attorney, mediator, child and family reporter and guardian ad litem, I am constantly reminded that neither side is completely right. This supports the philosophy of using a collaborative and non-adversarial approach to produce solutions. You will likely find me to be of even temperament, understanding and empathetic. You will also notice that I will likely challenge you to view issues from the other party’s perspective to help create compromise. If both sides operate in a respectful manner, solutions emerge. I believe that a measure of unity can be achieved by using my process to produce solutions.
